There’s something incredibly powerful about freezing a moment in time—the way a groom’s eyes well up as his bride walks down the aisle, the joyful chaos of the dance floor, or the quiet tenderness of a couple holding hands before the ceremony. If moments like these stir something in your soul, then becoming a photographer might just be the path you’re meant to take.
Learn the Basics First
The first step to becoming a photographer is understanding the fundamentals. Photography isn’t just about clicking a button—it’s about knowing how light works, how to compose an image, and how to use your camera to tell a story. Whether you’re learning through YouTube, online courses, or in-person workshops, building a solid foundation is essential. I personally recommend the Katelyn James Beginner Course—it breaks down the technical side of photography in a way that’s super approachable and easy to understand, especially if you’re just starting out. It was a game-changer for me and so many other photographers I know.
Invest Slowly in Quality Gear
Once you’re confident with the basics, it’s time to think about your gear. You don’t need every fancy gadget right away, but a reliable camera body, a couple of versatile lenses, and basic lighting tools will set you up for success.
Practice—and Then Practice Some More
There’s no shortcut here. Practice as much as you can. Photograph your friends, shoot in all kinds of lighting, and say yes to any opportunity that lets you gain experience. Growth happens through trial and error, and every session teaches you something new.
Learn From Those Ahead of You
One of the most valuable steps in becoming a photographer is learning from those who are already doing it well. Assisting or second shooting for experienced wedding photographers will give you hands-on experience in a high-pressure environment. You’ll learn how to manage timelines, handle unexpected challenges, and stay creative on the fly. Before photographing your own weddings, it’s crucial to work alongside other professionals. Not only will you gain technical skills, but you’ll also build confidence, learn how to interact with couples and vendors, and better understand what it takes to lead a wedding day with professionalism and grace.
Build Your Brand and Style
As you gain confidence, start building a portfolio that reflects your eye and heart. Then create a simple, clean online presence—whether that’s a website, an Instagram feed, or both. Stay consistent, connect with other vendors, and let your style shine through.
Becoming a photographer isn’t just about taking pretty pictures. It’s about serving people, telling meaningful stories, and never stopping your pursuit of growth. If you lead with heart, keep showing up, and stay curious, this dream can absolutely become your reality. There is so much beauty to capture—and your journey is only just beginning.
